Plasmalite® LP HR/SR – Skin rejuvenation and hair removal in one unit

How can skin rejuvenation improve aged skin?

Sun damaged and/or aged skin is characterized not only by wrinkles, but also by epidermal and dermal atrophy, rough skin texture, irregular pigmentation (“dyschromia”), telangiectasias, superficial pigmented lesions, laxity and enlarged pores. These can be treated through a variety of methods including; dermabrasion, chemical peeling, injection of collagen, hyaluronic acid or other ‘fillers’, as well as ablative CO2 and Erbium: YAG laser skin resurfacing, all which result in some form of temporary ( and sometimes, permanent ) cosmetically unacceptable appearance, thus requiring some ‘down-time’. There is a fast growing interest in the development of non-invasive and non-ablative methods to treat aged or damaged skin, techniques which do not require ‘down-time’ and which enable the patient to go about his or her normal activities. A non-coherent broad band pulsed light source, Plasmalite®, is the latest and most effective choice for improvement of the overall skin appearance. The treatment improves lesions such as vascular and pigmented disorders, fine lines, enlarged pores and laxity of the skin. The same equipment is also effective for permanent hair reduction.

The basic principle of skin rejuvenation, treatment of vascular lesions and hair removal is based on the theory of selective photo-thermolysis, i.e. selective heating of the unwanted skin lesions to temperatures high enough to destroy the lesion, without any damage to the surrounding skin.

 :: What is Plasmalite®?

Plasmalite® utilizes the latest technology based on a unique combination of patented fluorescent filter technology, selected spectra of light emission, unique “micro-pulse” forming and sapphire based skin-cooling system. Plasmalite® offers a non-invasive, safe and effective method for skin rejuvenation, treatment of vascular lesions and permanent hair reduction.

The Plasmalite® offers the following features:

• The easy-to-read control panel with user-friendly pulse-width setting and a practical pulse counter

• The low-weight ergonomic hand piece with sapphire wave-guide

• The quick-change fluorescent polymer filter

 :: How does Plasmalite® work?

Plasmalite® uses filtered light to selectively target the melanin, haemoglobin and collagen in the skin - the clinical effects are the result of light/chromophore interaction based on the theory of selective photo-thermolysis. A sapphire crystal waveguide conducts the filtered light to the target chromophores in the tissues. The excessive potentially harmful heat that is generated in the epidermis is efficiently removed by the sapphire crystal which is in direct contact with the skin and which has excellent thermal conductivity, resulting in a high speed of heat removal (30 times more efficient compared to water or gel). Clinical studies have shown that selective heating of the dermal collagen layer to a temperature of about 60°C destroys existing sun-damaged collagen, stimulating the fibroblasts to produce new collagen. The increase in collagen production takes place during a period of 8-10 weeks and lasts for 6-12 months after the last treatment. The biological mechanism of photo-thermal collagen stimulation is not yet fully explained, but it is believed to be similar to the mechanism of wound healing after selective activation of the fibroblasts. A large number of clinical trials have proven that the method efficiently makes the skin texture smooth by increasing the thickness of the collagen layer.

Vascular lesions can be treated through selective absorption of the light by the haemoglobin at a wavelength band starting from selected 535-615 nm and from that ‘cut-on’ wave-length up to about 1000 nm. When the temperature reaches about 60-65°C the blood coagulates and the inner cells of the intermediate sized blood vessel denature, causing the vessel to coagulate and collapse. In contrast to many short-pulsed lasers, Plasmalite® with its ability to utilize longer pulse widths, does not cause purpura in the treated area. Purpura results from the rupture of the micro vessels due to rapid heating by light pulses of short pulse-widths and high energy peaks. This is a typical side effect experienced with short-pulsed lasers. The broadband spectrum of Plasmalite® generates a homogenous heating throughout the lesions, while the single wavelength lasers produce non-homogeneous heating, since monochromatic light has a fixed absorption depth for a specific chromophore.

 :: What is meant by the multifunctionality of the Plasmalite®?

The Plasmalite® device can be used for the treatment of multiple conditions, including:

• Vascular lesions (telangiectasiae, haemangioma, spider veins, etc)

• Skin texture and fine line improvement through collagen stimulation & collagen shrinking
  (“non invasive instant facelift”)

• Hyper-pigmentation and improvement of dyschromia resulting in an evenly-coloured skin

• Hair removal (permanent hair removal/reduction)

• Acne and scarring improvement Plasmalite® machine can easily be adapted for each type of treatment
  by selecting an appropriate combination of lamp and filter. Lamp and filter interchange is easy and fast.

 :: How many treatments are needed?

The number of treatments required varies depending on the individual and the condition being treated.

Photorejuvenation requires 3-5 consecutive treatments spaced about 3 weeks apart.

Hair removal typically requires 3-6 treatments, with occasional ‘touch-ups’.

Vascular and Pigmented lesions normally require between 1-6 treatments, depending on the condition and its severity.

 :: Who could be treated?

Plasmalite® can be used on almost any subject of either gender, with skin type I to V.

 :: Are there any contraindications?

Subjects with disorders like active localized or systemic infections, compromised immune system, coagulation disorders and/or use of aspirin, cortisone, heparin, and elevated photosensitivity as well as pregnant patients should not be treated.
